Zoom teeth whitening is a popular treatment that is used around the world, to lighten the stains that discolour your teeth. A white smile gives us more confidence and makes the face more attractive. Serenity Smiles Dental is pleased to offer our patients this whitening system that produces results.

Why Do Teeth Become Discoloured?

Discolouration or yellowing of the teeth is a natural part of the ageing process. As we get older our teeth get stained from eating and drinking dark beverages and foods like red wine, coffee, cola and tea. And, ageing itself caused the teeth to change colour, as the dentin inside your teeth enamel also gets yellower over time.

What Is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

The Zoom teeth whitening system makes use of a bleaching agent containing hydrogen peroxide that is activated by a light to speed up the whitening process. Let’s take a closer look at how this happens.

What Can You Expect From Zoom Teeth Whitening

Before you can go ahead with Zoom teeth bleaching your dentist must perform a thorough inspection of your teeth and gums to ensure they are in good health. He will also give your teeth a professional clean and check for any cavities. You will have a discussion about your goals and needs to find the right shade for you.

It is important to note that veneers will not respond to teeth whitening, so the procedure would need to be done prior to having veneers done.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Take?

Once your teeth have been professionally cleaned the actual whitening component can be done in less than an hour. Many of our patients find the treatment convenient enough to squeeze in during a lunch break, and return to the office straight afterwards.

First your dentist will cover your lips, gums and soft tissue, leaving only your teeth exposed.

Then the bleaching agent, which consists of 25% hydrogen peroxide, is applied to the surface of your teeth. The Zoom light will be shone onto the bleaching agent in order to activate it, and to break up the stains that discolour your teeth. the light offers the advantage of being able to give certain teeth or areas of the mouth more attention if they are more stained. Ultimately your dentist will give you an even result.

The bleaching gel will be left on for 15 minutes before your dentist removes it. Afterwards your dentist will apply a fluoride gel to your teeth to reduce sensitivity.

It is normal to experience some degree of tooth sensitivity after the procedure. Some people report a tingling sensation, which is possibly caused by the light of the system. Ask your dentist about sensitivity toothpaste to use in the days following your treatment.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Of course your newly bleached white teeth will not last forever and are likely to discolour over the course of time. The rate at which this happens will depend on what you expose your teeth to. If you are a smoker, your teeth are likely to discolour faster than if you are a non-smoker. If you continue to drink a lot of red wine, coffee or cola, your white teeth will need more regular touch ups

In order to maintain your bright white smile you can use a take-home kit for touch-ups. It is important that you follow your dentist’s instructions and do not leave the trays in for longer than indicated.

You may also want to speak to your dentist about a whitening toothpaste to use between treatments.
