Veneers

Veneers are very thin covers or shells that are placed and bonded over the surface of the teeth. This effectively functions as a cover or mask over its shape, colour or position. Let’s have a closer look at veneers in our Epping clinic and how you can benefit from this cosmetic procedure.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin and usually made from porcelain or resin composite substances. They are custom-made to suit your teeth’s natural colour, curve and shape. The custom-made shells are bonded to the surface of your natural teeth to improve the way they look, as well as their length and their colour.

Porcelain veneers in our Epping clinic are more resistant to staining than resin veneers and are usually more effective at reflecting light in a way similar to your natural teeth.

What Are Veneers Used For?

Veneers may be recommended:

● To improve the colour of teeth that have been stained by medication, root canal treatment, large fillings or other causes.
● To improve the appearance of worn-down teeth
● To improve chipped, broken or cracked teeth.
● To improve uneven, irregular or misaligned teeth
● To improve teeth that have big gaps between them

What Can You Expect When You Have Veneers Fitted?

A veneer procedure usually includes at least three visits to the dentist. Your first visit will be a consultation and discussion about your treatment plan, and the two subsequent visits will be for your treatments.

Your first consultation and treatment planning
During your first appointment you should explain to your dentist what you hope to achieve. Your dentist will decide whether veneers are the best course of treatment with you, and what you can expect. X-rays of your teeth might be needed.
Your follow up visits
During your second appointment, your dentist will remove some of your tooth enamel. It will be the same thickness of the veneers, so that the difference is not noticeable in your mouth. This is usually done under anaesthetic.
Making the veneer
Next your dentist will take impressions of your teeth. This model will be sent off to the laboratory that will create your veneers. After a few days you will probably be called back to have them placed.
Placing the veneer
Before the veneer is bonded permanently to the surface of your teeth, your dentist will check what it looks like to assess the fit and colour. It will probably need to be adjusted a few times to get the best fit with the cement that will be used.
Once your dentist is satisfied with the final result, your teeth will be cleaned and polished, and then etched to ensure the veneer stays bonded. Your teeth are prepared with a specific type of cement. Then, the veneer is placed into it and held under a special light that hardens the material.

Afterwards your dentist will remove any extra cement and check your bite. Your dentist may ask to see you after a few weeks, to check how you have adapted.
